Sprains and Strains

Dr. Mike
I have a 2 1/2 year old german shorthair. Sunday, I had him out of his kennel and was playing fetch with him. I threw the first dummy and when he took off after it, he yelped. After he brought it back, I threw it again and he would not go after it. I then checked his feet and hips and when I move the back left leg at the hip, he is in pain. When he is walking or running around I cannot notice a limp, but when he has to put pressure on it, such as fetching a dummy from a sitting position, I can tell he is in pain. He has had no problems to this point with his hips and he was fine on Saturday when we were out hunting (We only hunted for an hour and we trained all summer so I know he could not have been sore from the hunting). Could he have sprained it somehow, and if so what is the best treatment, or could it be something more serious.
Thank you for your help.
Jeff

As usual if in doubt go see the vet. For minor sprains and strains I like to use "Ascriptin" which is buffered aspirin/malox product that is well tolerated by most dogs. I use one regular strength tablet per 35 pounds 1 or 2 times daily.
