Dog Aggressive Behaviour

Postby Birddogs » Sun Dec 09, 2018 9:33 pm

My 12 yr old Griffon has started growling when being handled
by my wife or I . He has been aggressive towards other dogs
And strangers for awhile now.
I will take him to the vet tomorrow , but it's such a sudden change
around here .
I was petting him and he was all wagging , head in my lap ....and suddenly
like a switch .He was growling , ears back , i grabbed his collar and walked him
to his area and gated him in .
I have a muzzle , and will use it .
In my eleven dogs I have seen this only once before 13 yr. old Viszla....
diagnosed dimentia .
Your thoughts other than a trip to the vet....that's a given .
My hearts breaking ....I hope it's a tooth .

Most likely dog is hurting somewhere. Too bad that they do not have a better means of telling us what that might be, but the vet should be able to isolate the problem. Best of luck with that diagnosis.

Agree, Sounds like something hurts. Hopefully the vet will figure it out in short order.

Man, my Griff lays his head in my lap when being petted, stub wagging, just as you described. That behavior would sure scare me that something was wrong. My hope is that it is not serious and that its just a tummy ache, tooth ache, or ear ache and just getting a little cranky in its old age. I am wishing you the best.
You never have to tell a dog what time to be home, give them the keys, and they never ask for money.

Vet Update..
Vet feels not physical pain driven .....
Old dog pre senility, possible thyroid.
Mini seizures, possible , to be monitored .
Doing a blood screen . ???
I have limited tolerance for aggression particularly
towards the guy paying the bills .
Maybe mental ....
It's a tough one !
Doc could chime in !

I don't want to downplay that this guy has the strongest prey drive of any versatile
I have owned , he's hell on coyotes .
Results are imminent .

I'm believing the vet , dimentia , today typical behaviour
he comes to you to be petted , he then growls and snaps at you .

I know we are done here , breaks me up .
But I'm afraid to leave him alone with
the familly.
He was a great pal but the years caught up
with him ...thanks for your help .

Sorry to hear that diagnosis.
I've had several really good dogs, but none were perfect. Neither am I, so keep that in mind!
