One More Time

Postby AverageGuy » Fri Feb 16, 2018 9:19 pm

Back on the River today for our last Dark Goose hunt of the season. We had 2 days of 60 and 50 degrees which thawed out the ponds, followed by another cold front. It was 17 degrees when we launched the boat with hopes the ponds would refreeze and push the geese back to the river. Didn't happen that way and our hunt was a little slow overall. We had a cackler decoy into the spread and land while we still getting setup so we got the skunk off early.

Our Decoy Spread

Spud Retrieving a WhiteFront Goose which had floated down river a bit. The Whitefront decoyed in with 3 big Honkers. Spud retrieved the two Honkers first and then I sent him on the Whitefront.

Spud watching the sky, hoping for another Retrieve. Ended up with 4 Honkers and One Whitefront. Our late season hunts did alot to further Spud's waterfowl education particularly working in the iced up river current and geese. We have more work to do but I really enjoyed my young dog and that is why we have them.

That's a great day! When I die and come back in the afterlife, I want to come back as Spud!

Side note: I have never seen a honker actually dive. That is crazy. Did it go completely underwater?

Looks like a blast! Very jealous.

We used those panel blinds on the Chesapeake...worked like a charm.

Yes it did. Some of them can be really cagey, resurfacing with only their beak to get air. Combine that with some cold swift river current and it provides excellent stimulate/training for a young dog.

I here by move to strike the P from Spuds name and replace it with a T. Will anyone second the motion?

Spud says Thanks for the Support guys. He is not perfect but closer to it than I am :D. He is the first dog I have raised since I retired which enables us to spend a lot of time together. Sure do enjoy him.

Great pics AveragGuy!

Spud sure looks like his mama. Here is a head shot of Tater at 2 years old. Pic taken in September before hunting took off her beard.

No doubt Tater put her stamp on Spud. I notice the same reddish brown mustache on Spud as seen on Tater.

Kelly, You have done a really nice job with your Breeding program, and I and many others others appreciate it.
