Tracking Deer

I want to get my lab to track deer after I shoot them? I think if I could I could help people find deer that they have shoot and there will not be as many lost.

Tracking deer with a dog can be easily done. The versatile breeds are frequently used for this in Europe. There are a few considerations, however.

You need to check your local laws before you start. Many states will not permit dog tracking of large game either before or after the shot.

If you use your lab to hunt upland birds, you may create some very real problems if you start teaching and encouraging him to pursue big game animals. The dog not care if he is chasing deer or pheasants. You might.

If you find that big game tracking with a dog is legal then you need to starts teaching the dog how to track big game. I would recommend that you research this training area through the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) and other versatile training organizations specializing in this area.
